Choosing a data window for crash trend work
A useful crash trend window covers at least two full release cycles and one quiet period without a major marketing push. For many consumer apps that means four to eight weeks. Enterprise apps with monthly trains may need a longer span so each train appears more than once.
Mark known events on the same timeline: store feature promotions, OS updates that spiked adoption, and outages in a dependency. Without those markers, analysts will invent stories that fit the curve.
If symbolication only exists for the latest three builds, say so in the report. Trends built on incomplete stacks should carry lower confidence instead of precise-looking charts.
When we open a Crash Trend Assessment, the first shared artifact is often a one-page window definition — dates, releases included, and events to exclude — before any ranking begins.
